How to Refresh Curls on Day Two (Without Rewetting Your Whole Head)
To refresh curls on day two or three, put a little water back, then re-shape and let it dry. You don't need to rewet your whole head. Mist each section until it's damp, not dripping, scrunch or finger-coil the curls back into their clumps, and leave them alone while they dry. If your hair still feels dry after that, the fix is a light layer of curl cream on the driest sections, not more spray.
Day-two curls go flat for simple reasons: water evaporates out of the strand, and sleep and friction pull the clumps apart. A good refresh fixes both in about five minutes.
Why do my curls lose definition after day one?
Two things happen overnight.
- The strand dries out. Curls hold their shape partly because they're holding water. As that water leaves, the curl loosens and the cuticle (the shingled outer layer of the strand) roughens, which reads as frizz.
- The clumps break up. Pillow friction and touching split curl groups into smaller strands. More strands means more frizz and less shape.
So a refresh needs water to put the moisture back and a little re-shaping to rebuild the clumps.
How do I refresh curls without rewetting my whole head?
- Shake your spray. In a refresher with oils, like our Curl Hydration Spray, the oils settle between uses.
- Work in sections. Split your hair into four. Hold the bottle 4 to 6 inches away and mist each section evenly, enough to dampen, not soak.
- Re-clump. Scrunch upward with your palms, or twist a few frizzy pieces around your finger to rebuild the curl.
- Hands off. Let it air-dry or diffuse on low. Touching curls while they're damp is the fastest way to frizz.
- Seal only where it's dry. If the ends still feel rough once dry, smooth a pea-sized amount of Curl Moisture Cream over just those pieces.
The whole refresh should leave your hair damp for a few minutes, not wet for an hour.
What's in a good curl refresher spray?
Look for water first on the label, then a humectant. A humectant is an ingredient that pulls water toward itself and holds it, and glycerin is the classic one. Curl Hydration Spray is purified water and vegetable glycerin, with argan and rose flower oils for a light softness and vitamin E to keep the oils fresh. It's protein-free and coconut-oil-free, so it works for sensitive curls too.
What you don't want in an everyday refresher is anything that builds up with repeat use. A thin, water-based mist doesn't leave a layer behind, so you can use it daily.
Can a curl refresher spray work as a leave-in?
Ours does both jobs. Curl Hydration Spray is a refresher between wash days and a light, water-based leave-in on wash day: mist each wet section, and for fine or low porosity hair that can be all the leave-in you need. A curl cream is the heavier layer. It's thicker and stays on the hair to soften, smooth and hold that moisture in, so thick, dry coils usually want the spray first and a cream like Curl Moisture Cream on top. Between wash days, most people need only the spray, plus a little cream on dry ends. I compare all three in leave-in vs. curl cream vs. curl refresher.
How do I refresh a twist-out or a wash-and-go?
- Twist-out: mist lightly, just enough to soften, then re-twist the frizziest sections loosely before bed and unravel in the morning. A drop of Argan Rose Hair Oil on your fingertips helps the unravel. My full method is in how to do a twist-out that lasts.
- Wash-and-go: mist, then scrunch gently to break any light set and rebuild the clumps. If you styled with Curl Enhancing Custard, a light mist and a scrunch are usually enough; skip the extra gel.
Can I refresh braids, locs or wigs?
Yes. A light water-based mist works on braids, locs, wigs and weaves, because there's nothing heavy to build up. Focus on your scalp line and edges with braids, and mist lengths from a little farther away on wigs so they don't get soaked.
How many days can I go between wash days?
That depends on your hair and your products, but most curls do well with a refresh on days two and three and a full wash once or twice a week. If you're refreshing every day and curls still feel dry by midday, the problem is usually upstream: your wash day needs a deeper conditioning step, like the Babassu Deep Conditioner, or a richer leave-in such as Sweet Almond Heavy Cream.
Quick answers
How do I refresh curls on day two?
Mist each section with a water-based refresher until it's damp, scrunch or finger-coil the curls back into clumps, and let them dry without touching.
Can I refresh curls without water?
Not well. Curls lose shape as they lose water, so a refresh needs water back in. A light mist is enough; you don't need to rewet your whole head.
Can a curl refresher spray be a leave-in?
Curl Hydration Spray is both: a refresher between wash days and a light, water-based leave-in on wash day. Thick, dry coils can add a curl cream on top.
Why are my curls frizzy after refreshing?
Usually too much water, or touching curls while they dry. Mist until damp, not dripping, then keep your hands off until they're fully dry.
Can I use a curl refresher every day?
Yes, if it's a light, water-based formula that doesn't build up. If curls still feel dry daily, deepen your wash-day conditioning instead.
