Babassu Hair Therapy Mask — Plant-Protein Repair for Curls

Ask Obia · Episode 1 · Protein: yes or no?

If a wet strand stretches and never bounces back, it’s asking for protein.

Hair is 90% protein. Damage chips the outside and the protein leaks out. Babassu Hair Therapy Mask patches those gaps with hydrolyzed rice and wheat proteins, then olive and babassu oils put the softness back. Ten to fifteen minutes, every third or fourth wash.

  • Plant‑based proteins
  • pH 4.5–5.5

Protein here, moisture there

This jar is for strength.

A deep conditioner has one of two jobs: put water back in, or patch the gaps. Babassu Hair Therapy Mask does the second. Hydrolyzed rice and wheat proteins settle into the worn spots along a damaged strand and give it its bounce back. If your hair is thirsty rather than weak, that’s the Babassu Deep Conditioner.

Reach for this jar if your hair…

  • Stretches a lot, feels mushy, and doesn’t bounce back when wet
  • Is heat‑styled, color‑treated, relaxed, or highly porous
  • Breaks at the ends no matter how much moisture you add
  • Needs rebuilding every third or fourth wash

Reach for the Deep Conditioner instead if…

  • A wet strand snaps fast with little stretch — that’s thirst, not weakness
  • Your hair goes stiff or straw‑like after protein (protein‑sensitive) or is low porosity

The 10‑second test: one wet strand, stretch. Sags → protein (this jar). Snaps → moisture (the Deep Conditioner). Bounces back → leave it alone.

What's inside, and why it works

Plant proteins, done right.

Hydrolyzed rice + wheat proteins

“Hydrolyzed” means broken into small, water‑soluble pieces — small enough to absorb into worn spots along the strand, so hair gets its strength back without a stiff coating.

Olive oil

The first oil on the label. Rich in oleic acid, which absorbs and softens rather than sitting on top.

Babassu seed oil

Melts close to body temperature, so it spreads easily and seals without grease.

Safflower seed oil

A light oil that adds softness without weight.

Cationic conditioners

Cetrimonium chloride and stearamidopropyl dimethylamine are positively charged, so they cling to the rough spots on a damaged strand and smooth them. That’s the slip.

Rosemary extract

Rosemary leaf extract to soothe the scalp while the mask does its work.

pH 4.5–5.5. The slightly acidic range where the cuticle lies flat. Tap water sits at 7 and lifts the cuticle; this brings it back down. FREE FROM mineral oil, petroleum, sulfates, parabens. No silicones. Vegan and cruelty‑free. Made in our own manufacturing space in Dallas. Contains hydrolyzed wheat protein.

10–15 minute protein treatment

How to use it.

  1. Cleanse. Start with the Coconut Shea or Neem Tea Tree Shampoo Bar.
  2. Apply generously on damp hair. Root to tip, section by section.
  3. Cover for 10–15 minutes. Plastic cap on. Add heat or a steamer for the most intensive treatment.
  4. Rinse with cool water. Cool water lays the cuticle back down.
  5. Seal with a leave‑in. Curl Moisture Cream, Sweet Almond Heavy Cream, or Twist Whip Butter for a twist‑out.

What to expect: strands feel firmer and bouncier after the first treatment. Breakage is slower to judge — give it three or four. Let the stretch test set your frequency, and alternate with the Deep Conditioner when hair leans dry.

Proof

Your curls get the final vote.

Initially my order got stuck in transit, but I contacted Obia Naturals and they sent a new one right away. This deep conditioner strengthens and moisturizes at the same time. Great product and great service!

Must have!

This mask provided by hair with moisture.ni have colour treated hair and needed a moisture boost. As soon as I applied this mask to my hair my curls became springy and defined. Lots of slip. Works even better when you add heat to the treatment. I used a hothead cap to do this. Good product that I'm adding to my routine.

Questions, answered.

Mask or Deep Conditioner — which one do I need?

Do the wet‑strand test. Stretch one wet strand: if it sags, feels mushy, and doesn’t bounce back, it has protein gaps, so this jar. If it snaps fast, it’s thirsty, so the Babassu Deep Conditioner. If it bounces back, leave it alone.

How often should I use it?

Every third or fourth wash if you color, relax, or heat‑style, or whenever the stretch test says “sag.” Moisture every wash in between. Your hair will tell you when it wants more — it always does.

Can protein make my hair stiff?

Yes, if you pile it on hair that doesn’t have gaps. That’s protein overload, and it’s why this is a treatment, not an every‑wash conditioner. If your hair ever feels straw‑like after a protein product, switch to the Deep Conditioner until it softens.

Is it safe for color‑treated or relaxed hair?

Yes — that’s who it’s for. Chemical services chip the outside of the strand; the hydrolyzed proteins patch the worn spots and the pH 4.5–5.5 formula helps the cuticle lie flat.

Will it work on low‑porosity hair?

With heat, and only when the strand asks for protein. A tight cuticle needs a steamer or heat cap to let the mask in. Low‑porosity hair usually wants moisture far more often than protein.

What does “hydrolyzed” mean?

Broken into small, water‑soluble pieces. Whole proteins are too big to do anything but sit on the surface; hydrolyzed rice and wheat proteins are small enough to settle into the damaged spots along the strand.

What’s it free from?

Mineral oil, petroleum, sulfates, parabens. No silicones, no animal waxes. Vegan and cruelty‑free. It does contain hydrolyzed wheat protein. Every OBIA formula is made in our own manufacturing space in Dallas.

How much is in the jar?

8 oz / 226 g. Apply generously root to tip on damp hair.
